Press Release Summary: Dr. Andrew Horowitz D.M.D, MD gives advice on how to minimize
your childs injuries

Press Release Body: From the infant who is beginning to walk, to the adolescent
learning to ride their bicycles, to the teenager playing soccer, childhood injuries
are common place. Prevention is our best treatment. Facial fractures make up 5% of
all fractures that occur. The incidence of tooth avulsion can be as high as 16%.
Nearly 5 million teeth will be lost by children due to injuries in the US this year.
In a study over a 2 year period, 1870 patients with facial lacerations were
investigated. The largest number occurred in children under 9 years of age. These
are real problems that can't be eliminated, but can certainly be reduced
The following are some suggestions to minimize these injuries:
1. Prevent children from climbing or playing on furniture or stairs
2. Maintain all doorways and entryways free of all toys
3. Cushion all table top corners
4. Make sure children wear protective gear: helmets, appropriate facemasks, or
mouthguards when participating in activities such as tricycle/bicycle riding and
sports participation.

In the unlikely event your child has sustained an injury and he or she is
unconscious, disoriented, nauseated, dizzy or otherwise incapacitated, call 911
immediately. Otherwise, contact your nearest Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (Oral
Surgeon) They are the specialists who have had extensive training in the treatment
and emergency care for teeth, mouth, jaws, and associated facial structures. Dr.
Horowitz practices at New York Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Scarsdale, New York
